Rise & Shine- Mastering Your Morning Routine

May 2023 Let’s be real, there are no “best” practices that suit anyone and everyone when it comes to morning practices. Depending on your phase of life & what you do for a living, some things may work for you, some things may not.

However, whether you’re a busy mum juggling toddlers or school drop off, an early starter at work (🙋🏽) or one that sleeps longer in the morning, I’m sure we can agree on this- a good morning routine sets the tone for the day.

And NO-

The most important thing isn't WHAT TIME you get out of bed- it’s WHAT HAPPENS when you get out of bed.

So, Tip #1 Wake up at your right time.

Whilst the “5am club” works for some, don’t force it if it’s just not there. Your daily responsibilities/duties may mean that you get to bed later at night, therefore need to get up later in the morning.

BUT if you want to be part of the 5am club because you believe it will make your life better, then plan for it! Get to bed earlier. Prepare the night before and don’t hit snooze.

Tip #2 Prepare the night before.

A morning routine starts the night before! Have your clothes picked out, prepare your breakfast & lunch and have your to-do list ready.

If you eliminate morning decision making you will have more energy and mind power for the rest of the day.

Tip #3 Hydrate before you caffeinate.

Need I say more? Your water intake needs to start early in the day.

Tip #4 Practice mindfulness.

Take the time to just be in the present moment. This may mean your daily gratitude practice, prayer, reading. Whatever allows you to just be, without distractions.

Tip #5 Eat breakfast (including some form of protein!)

A healthy breakfast kickstarts that metabolism and gives you the brain power and physical energy you need for the day.

Tip #6 Movement.

I bet you're not surprised I added this one here, right?! Even just a short movement practice. I can help with this! One of my FAVE ways to move my body even when low in energy- Controlled Articular Rotations (CARS)

Tip #7 If possible view sunlight within the first few hours of waking.

Dr Huberman says “as soon as you can, even if through cloud cover”. This increases cortisol and prepares the body for sleep later. It also positively influences your immune system, metabolism and circadian clock, AND will help you focus better during the day. (When you can, please google Dr Huberman, or look him up on insta, he is totally dreamy [in a very professional way])😍

Mark Twain famously said-

"If the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, you can go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that that is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day long."

The "frog" is your most important task. Perhaps it’s what you’re dreading because it's so big. Do this first. This will give you a huge boost of accomplishment and will help get the to-do list ticked off.

Although morning routines are important, it’s also important to be flexible. Situations may arise that you have not planned for. Be adaptable. Don’t let your whole day be thrown if your morning is out of whack.

I hope these small tips help you in creating a morning routine fit for a champ!
