I was obsessed with core work

APRIL 2023 As a teenager and into my 20’s (ok let’s be honest- and well into my 30s) I was totally obsessed with working my core.

I thought this is what would make me look “skinny” - with washboard abs ready for the summer. I had ZERO idea about the fundamentals of core training. I just wanted to do a million sit-ups to work my 6pack without a second thought even given to the deep core (or proper technique for that matter).

Apart from being naïve & far too image conscious, I was also totally uneducated.

For this☝🏾 I don’t blame myself.

I blame the fitness industry for never letting me know that there’s more to working my core than doing a million sit-ups.

Also, for never putting out the message that working out is not just about being skinny.

So, here I am trying to rectify this.

There are 2 ways to work your core-

1. Creating Movement

2. Resisting Movement

What does that mean?

It means that core work is in pretty much everything you do.

How so?

When creating movement, you are moving your spine in all the ways it was designed to move- through extension, side flexion, rotation, forward flexion. So, think moves such as supermans, bicycles, woodchopper, sit-ups.

But in my opinion the real magic happens when we resist movement.

When resisting movement, you are trying to stop your spine from extension, side flexion, rotation, flexion. So, think stabilizing moves such as toe taps, farmers carry, pallof press, deadlift.

Core work (and fitness in general) is not just about how you look.

It’s about how you feel. How you move. It’s about Connection. Good health. Vitality.

All the things I promote on my platform 💜

Now when I work my core, I don’t think merely of my abdominals. I think of those deeper muscles that allow me to run, walk, stand and move better, without pain and injury. And for this I’m so grateful!
